Turn a cold conservatory into a room

If you have a conservatory you stopped using years ago, the structure is usually fine. It is the roof that is letting it down.

What changes

Replacing the roof, keeping the room

A solid, insulated roof replaces the old glass or polycarbonate on the existing base and frames. The room stops swinging between freezing and unbearable, and starts behaving like the rest of the house.

  • Insulated tiled roof systems
  • Fitted to existing conservatory frames and base
  • Plastered internal ceiling
  • Roof windows or lanterns to keep the light

Why people do it

What actually improves

Usable all year

The main reason. A properly insulated roof takes the extremes off both ends, so the room works in January as well as June.

Quieter

Rain on polycarbonate is the other common complaint. A solid roof removes it more or less entirely.

Finished properly inside

A plastered ceiling with lighting makes it read as part of the house rather than as a conservatory you have put a hat on.

Common questions

Worth knowing before you book

Will the existing frames take the weight?

That is the first thing to check, and it is checked before anything is quoted. Most modern conservatories are suitable; some older or lightweight structures are not.

Will the room go dark?

It changes the light, so roof windows or a lantern are usually part of the design. The aim is a room that is bright rather than glaring.

Does it need building regulations approval?

Replacing a conservatory roof with a solid one can bring it into building control, depending on the structure and how the room is separated from the house. We will tell you where you stand before work starts.
