Bi-fold doors

Open the back of the house properly

Bi-folds fold back against the wall instead of swinging into the room, so you get most of the opening rather than half of it.

How they work

Panels, and which way they stack

A bi-fold is specified by how many panels it has and which way they fold. That decides where you end up standing when the doors are open, so it is worth thinking about before the order goes in, not after.

  • Aluminium and uPVC frames
  • Two to six panel configurations
  • Left, right or split stacking
  • Low thresholds where the floor build-up allows

Worth knowing

Three decisions that matter

Which way they fold

Stack them the wrong side and you lose the bit of patio you actually sit on. We work this out on site, looking at how you use the space.

Traffic door

One panel can be set up as a normal opening door, so you are not folding the whole run back just to let the dog out.

Threshold height

A flush threshold looks best and is easier to walk over, but depends on your floor levels and drainage. We will tell you what is achievable.

How it works

Common questions

Worth knowing before you book

Are bi-folds cold in winter?

Modern aluminium bi-folds are thermally broken, meaning there is an insulating barrier through the frame. They are a large area of glass, so the room will feel different to a solid wall, but they are not the draughty things they once were.

Bi-fold or sliding doors?

Bi-folds give you a bigger opening; sliders give you more glass and slimmer frames when shut. If you open them constantly, bi-fold. If you mostly look through them, consider a slider.

Do we need building work first?

If you are widening an existing opening, yes — that needs a suitable lintel and is a separate job. We will flag it at the visit rather than at installation.
